An introductory course in avalanche awareness, risk assessment and response.
Objective:
The main goal of the course is to introduce avalanches and how to respond to such a risk when travelling in the mountains in wintertime. At the end of the course attendants should be able to assess the potential of avalanches and know how to respond to an avalanche
Course:
The course lasts an evening and one full day
Evening: Introduction to metereology and avalanches, how to assess the situation and what can be used as a reference. How to respond to an avalanche. Introduction of the essential equipment; avalanche beacon and avalanche probe. Preparation for the outdoor activities.
Day: a whole day out in the snow where attendants try out the methods of assessing the risk of avalanches. The use of avalanche beacons and avalanche probes will be practised thoroughly.
Equipment: Appropiate clothing, avalanche beacon, avalanche probe and shovel.
Note: Prior Experience: There is no need for prior experience but it is an advantage if course attendants like snow!
