The goal of this course is to make participants better able to travel on glaciers and deal with unexpected difficulties like falling in a cravasse. They will furthermore be able to plan good routes on glaciers by reading maps and landscape.

- Glaciated Terrain

Goals of this course:
After this course the participants should be capable of traveling on glaciated terrain. They should know the appropriate equipment for glacier travel and crevasse rescue and know how to use it. They should also be able to plan good routes on glaciers by reading maps and landscape.

The course:
The biggest part of the course will be teaching basic methods of getting oneself and/or a partner out of a glacier crevasse. Topics covered will be; self arrest, snow protection, ice protection, pulley systems, single direction locking mechanism, climbing/prussiking up a rope and basic glaciology. We will also touch on the subject of climbing in glaciers. The course takes place outdoors and lasts for two days. It will be held on glacier tounges in the Skaftafell National Park where we will stay at the camp ground and travel to the nearby glaciers for training.

Prior experience: No prior experience is necessary, but experience in rope handling and mountaineering (climbing) helps. If you are a total newcommer to this field you should consider our Rock Climbing Course that gives a good introduction to different rope handling and techniques.

Participants should bring the appropriate clothing but Icelandic Mountain Guides will supply any specialized gear. Stiff hiking boots or mountaineering boots are necessary.

Included: Includes transport from Skaftefell campground to location on glacier. All specialized common glacier and mountaineering gear is included as well. Excluded: Transport to Skaftafell, accommodation in Skaftafell, personal gear, such as crampons, ice axes, harness, locking carabiners. Note: The price does not include campground fees nor transport to/from Reykjavik. Camping fee for each night is around 800 ISK pr. but we can also arrange a hotel og guesthoses for you. Transport Reykjavik Skaftafell and back can also be arranged.
