- Basics of mountaineering
Objectives:
The goal of this course is to teach participants the fundamentals of climbing and mountaineering with the highest safety standards in winter environments. Participants will learn how to plan trips and travel in the mountains so they get the confidence in building their own experience. Furthermore, there will be climbing on steep snowy slopes and/or ridges.
The Course:
The duration of the course is one evening and two days. Evening: Knots; figure of eight, bowline, girth hitch, fisherman´s knot and sling knots. There will be a discussion about when to use each knot and we also discuss the process of steep snow climbing etc. Introduction of mountaineering equipment and clothing.
Included: 1 instructor for every 6 participants, all necessary communal mountain equipment
Excluded: Drive to the mountain venue, all personal equipment such as: crampons, mountaineering axe, climbing harness, locking carabiner, helmet, avalanche beacon and poles.
Note: A detailed equipment list will be handed out at the start of the course. The instructor reserves the right to refuse the use of any equipment that participants bring on their own. It is possible to rent all necessary equipment from Icelandic Mountain Guides. Prior Experience: There is no need for prior experience. Participants should be in good physical and mental shape and have to show up for the two day part in the appropriate clothing and have the appropriate equipment.
