Three-day “Enduro Action” - the best of the Iceland’s single-tracks

Three fun-filled biking days packed with action for the adventurous biker, combining the best single tracks with some outstanding landscape. Access is by super-jeep, minimizing the uphill to get the best out of each day. On fast floating single tracks down along riverbeds and numerous waterfalls, or hard packed and highly technical downhill tracks next to Iceland’s most recent lava field, passing the craters of the 2010 eruption, the ride is wild and dramatic and even the bravest will walk the hardest sections. Last but not least the area of the world famous Laugavegur route with outstanding options is on the agenda. Both nights are spent in a guesthouse in southern central Iceland, where it is possible to relax in a hot tub jacuzzi after the actions of the day. Pure fun on fabulous terrain.

Biking: Enduro or All Mountain. The tour emphasis is on technical single-tracks, using superjeep access to increase the downhill and minimize the climbing. For experienced bikers only! Recommended bike: Full suspension bike with 4 - 6 inch travel/120 - 165mm.
Trails and terrain: The single tracks are sheep tracks and hiking paths. Some of them have been widened by horse riding. Most of them get no maintenance and they are not designed for biking. This is wild nature at its best and you never know what awaits around the next corner.
Available upon request: Four-star accommodation in Reykjavík - please contact us for more information

Practical information:

Bring your own bike:  You can easily bring your own bike and we recommend that for the more technical tours.  Bikes have to be packed in bike bags or cartons before flight.  The cost for air transfer is around 25€/22£/35$.

Before you pack your bike it should be tuned and in good working condition. We strongly recommend you have your bike checked out by a respectable bike shop prior to departure. Have your bike tuned up and any worn-out parts replaced. A mountain bike of good quality and in good operating condition is essential. Our guides carry tools and a supply of spare parts suitable for use on most bikes. If your bike has special features or specifications, then you must supply your own parts and tools.

Rent a bike:  The bikes you can rent are hard tail with 120 mm/4 inch fork and 2.1 inch tires.  They do for the XC tours but for the more technical tours like “Iceland best single track” it is necessary to bring your own bike. If renting a bike and using clip less pedals, please bring your pedals and shoes!

What to bring:  On all ours tours we have a large pump and the necessary gear for general maintenance.  We have tubes, tires, normal brake pads, cables, clippies and flat pedals and even shifters for sale on the same price as in bike stores in Reykjavík. You need to bring tools and gear that is specific for your bike.

* Technical difficulty, what to expect:
1. Good surface, short easy hills, wide path and wide turns. Good for beginners
2. Narrow paths with loose surface and gentle down steepness. Fun for all mountain bikers
3. Short steep sections, rocky paths, narrow turns, short rock steps. For experienced mountain bikers and fit bikers with little experience.
4. Longer steep sections, short very steep parts, side sloping paths, large steps and small drops. For experienced bikers only.
5. A Downhill course. Very steep sections, obligatory drops, narrow ridges. Experts only.

Day 1: The best of the colorful Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve

The tour starts on Thursday morning at 08:00. We pick you up at a Reykjavik guesthouse and drive to the colorful Landmannalaugar area. We climb with the support car up to the valley of Reykjadalur.  After reassembling the bikes and pumping air in to the tiers we start the days ride. We set off on the bike on the highest point of the road and take the steep gravel road down the Reykjadalur valley.  There are several interesting river crossing to do hard to get through without wet feet.  Even though there is quite a descent at the start it is not technical. The majority of the 50 km route of the day is on little used jeep tracks but the central part is on full single tracks. Our route lies parallel to the famous trail between Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk.

We propose a 50 km XC day with a 300 m ascent and 800 m descent. For those who have not had enough it is possible to race the support jeep and continue along the 4x4 track to Fljótshlíð where our guesthouse awaits with a jacuzzi and a bar.

Day 2: Fimmvörðuháls, the single track underneath the Eyjafjallajökull volcano

An early morning departure from our guesthouse for the 1 h drive along the south coast to the Eyjafjallajökull area where we spend the day.  We are riding the “Fimmvörðuháls” pass between the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Mýrdalsjökull.  This is a popular hiking route between the Þórsmörk valley and Skógar.  We use the 4x4 support car to take us up and the first run of the day is along the Skógará river to the south.  The view is fantastic with uncountable waterfalls and the river canyon of Skógará.  The single-track is gently down sloping, fast and floating for 8 km and 6oo m vertical descent. Usually participants love this part and we often have to repeat this part before we continue and do the technical descent on the north side of the pass. To get to the northern side there is about 100 m/300feet climb from where the support car drops us, and most of us will walk the steepest parts with the bikes. The top is at 1100 m/3400 feet altitude and is often covered with snow until the end of the summer.  The path takes us over the volcanic craters formed in the 2010 eruption where we will have a small break enjoying the impressive scenery. The northern side of Fimmvörðuháls is more technical than the southern side. Everyone will have to walk the hardest parts and there are section where the bikes have to be carried. The surroundings are superb and there are great photo and head cam opportunities.

There is some refreshment waiting for us when we arrive in the Þórsmörk valley.  Those who have not had enough of biking can race the support car along the rough track leading out of the valley returning to our guesthouse.

Fimmvörðuháls to the south: Descent : 600 m. Distance: 8 km. Time: 1-1,5 hours

Fimmvörðuháls to the north: Climb: 100 m. Descent: 1000 m. Distance: 10 km. Time: 4 hours

Day 3: The single tracks of the Mount Hengill Central Volcano

We set off from our guesthouse with all our belongings, heading back in the direction of Reykjavík.  Todays adventures are on the single tracks in the outdoor paradise of the Hengill area ending up with going down the most classical single track in Iceland the Reykjadalur valley. There are several possible starts to this day but we propose going through the Innstidalur valley technical single track with some short steep climb before going down to the hot springs at Ölkelduháls pass. For those choosing less physical effort it is possible to join the group here. From Ölkelduháls we have a fantastic descent down the Reykjadalur valley. The beginning is technical but soon changes to a fast floating single track. In the middle of the Reykjadalur valley there is a chance to enjoy a bath in a natural hot pool in the wild.

After the Reykjadalur valley there is a short gravel road to the village of Hveragerði.  Here it is possible to stop at the local pub before loading the support car and heading back to Reykjavík.

Innstidalur to Ölkelduháls on gravel road and jeep track:

Ascent: 100 m. Descent: 200m. Distance: 10 km. Time: 1,5 - 2 hours.

Ölkelduháls and down Reykjadalur single track:
Descent: 300 m. Distance: 5,5 km. Time: 1 hour.
