Eight-Day Base Camp Alpine Ski Touring in Greenland.

East Greenland or the “backside” as Greenlanders sometimes refer to it, is one of the greatest wilderness areas in the world with endless numbers of fjords, mountains, glaciers, valleys and lakes. Inland, reigns the world’s second biggest icecap, most of the time crowned by a radiating blue sky and beneath lie ice covered fjords and colorful villages. This eight days backcountry skiing in Liverpoolland offers great skiing days, joyful evenings and sunlight 24 hours per day. Dog sledges bring the group up to the Mountains where we set camp in the middle of nowhere. From our base, daily tours are taken up to the mountains nearby or down to the sea where enormous icebergs lie frozen into the ice. This tour is made for experienced skiers that can handle steep slopes off piste and are fit to walk on the skis or carry them up steep slopes. On the first day the slope is easy and then they get more demanding day by day. Exactly how steep the slopes become depends on the snow conditions and the group’s interest. Two or three routes will be chosen each day.

Day 1: Reykjavík-Constable Point
A morning flight from Reykjavík to Constable Point. On landing we continue with a helicopter to Ittoqqortoormiit, a colorful Inuit village of 600 people, situated by Scoresby Sound, the world’s biggest fjord. After a short break in town we head for the mountains. Dog sledges bring the group up to 700m in the middle of Liverpoolland where we make our camp and take a short skiing tour before relaxing over dinner and planning the routes to be done in the next few days.

Days 2-6: Skiing in the Roescoe Mountains
There are many choices of skiing routes, depending on each person’s abilities. The Roscoe Mountains, the southernmost part of Liverpoolland is ideal for backcountry skiing. Next to the camp stand the highest peaks of Liverpoolland, Krosbjerg Mountain, 1400 m high and Tvillingerne Mountain, 1430 m high. The mountain peaks lie close together and there is a variety of routes of all difficulty levels, few of which have been skied before.

Day 7: Ittoqqortoormiit
In the morning the luggage is packed before heading out to the skiing tour of the day.  After climbing a peak close by we ski down to sea level where the dog sledges are waiting with the luggage to bring us back to Ittoqqortoormiit where we hold a party. For those who have still some energy left, an Inuit ball is an option.

Day 8: Constable Point-Iceland
In the morning we take a sightseeing tour in the town before the helicopter brings us to Constable Point from where we fly to Iceland. Arriving in Iceland around in the early evening.
