  • Tour Description

    Highlights of the Tour

    • Backcountry skiing and sailing
    • Remote and unique
    • Stay on a beautiful sailboat

Jökulfirðir (“glacier fjords”) fjord system in the northern part of the west fjords of Iceland are among the most tranquil and isolated places you can find. Most of the Jökulfirðir area is inside the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve accessible only by boat. On this tour we set sail from Ísafjörður in a wooden sailboat into a secluded world. Here we sail between the fjords to put on our skis and take first runs down slopes that reach all the way down to the ocean. Our boat is a beautiful wooden vessel that is well equipped and comfortable, and fits this environment well. Skiing to the sea is this unique area provides one of the most memorable backcountry skiing in Iceland.

On this tour you will stay aboard sailing ship Donna Wood. The ship combines best qualities and comfort and is our mobile base. The ship is 30.2 m long (LOA) and accommodates 12 people in 7 beautiful cabins each equipped with washbasins and closets. The hallway features spacious shared shower facilities and toilets and the ship has a roomy deck saloon that seats 24. The ship is nimble and can easily navigate the coastline for better access to remote locations and the perfect base for sailboat skiing.

  • Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Ísafjörður - Hrafnfjörður in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.

Departure from the town of Ísafjörður (Fjord of ice) at 14:00, approximately 4 hours of sailing to Hrafnfjörður (Fjord of the raven) in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. This fjord is at the bottom of the glacier fjords and is one of the deepest of the glacier fjords. Here we will anchor and since it will still be bright in the evening during the latter part of the season, we will have an option to do a short ski run. Before we get going we will do a quick safety briefing with an avalanche search and rescue exercise.

Sailing: 4 hours  Skiing: 1-2 hours
    Elevation: ~ 600 m (2000 ') per run

    Day 2: Hrafnfjördur - Lónafjörður

This day will be spent skiing in the mountains of Hrafnfjörður. Hrafnfjörður was once home of famous outlaws Fjalla-Eyvindur and his wife Halla in the late 18th century, and Fjalla – Eyvindur is said to be buried there. There are also stories of elfs from this mythical area. After we make our way over to the next fjord, Lónafjörður (Fjord of lagoons) and anchor there in the inlet of Sópandi.

    Skiing: 6-8 hours
    Elevation: ~ 600 m (2000 ') per run

    Day 3: Lónafjörður

Lónafjörður is a narrow fjord with a lot of snow accumulation and today we may decide so stay a bit longer in Lónafjörður and ski in the mountains above the valleys of Sópandi and Rangali. Possibly anchoring an extra night in this remote wilderness.

    Skiing: 6-8 hours
    Elevation: ~ 600 m (2000 ') per run

    Day 4: Lónafjörður - Veiðileysufjörður

Today we are going to use our skis to get over to the next fjord. From Lónafjörður we ski up to the col of Rangali and then after taking a look around over to enjoy the views to the north, we ski down to Veiðileysufjörður where we anchor for the night.

    Skiing: 6-8 hours
    Elevation: min 600 m (2000 ') per run

    Day 5: Veiðileysufjörður - Hesteyrarfjörður

We will start our day by skiing the mountains of Veiðileysufjörður such as the scenic Lónhorn. Then  we will complete the day by skiing over to Hesteyrarfjörður, the western most of the glacier fjords where our beautiful Donna Wood will be waiting at anchor.

    Skiing: 6-8 hours
    Elevation: min 600 m (2000 ') per run

    Day 6: Hesteyri - Ísafjörður.

Morning ski session with an option to look at the old village and whaling station at Hesteyri, that is now abandoned. The hamet of Hesteyri was the last settlement in this are to be abandoned around the mid-twentieth century.  Sailing back to Ísafjörður, with arrival around 16:00 in the afternoon. You can catch the last flight from Ísafjörður that night, though it is suggested staying at least one night in Ísafjörður to relax and get to know this old and beautiful town.

    Skiing: 6-8 hours
    Elevation: min 600 m (2000 ') per run

*Please note that the itineraries described can change. Final itinerary will be decided when leaving Ísafjörður harbour. Above you find the most likely itinerary, but weather and snow-conditions are evaluated to look for the best possible option. Final decision on which routes will be skied each day is in the hands of the guide, and is based on snow conditions, snow stability and weather.
