    Mountain bike adventure in the North East

    This mountain bike adventure takes you through the magnificent landscapes of the north east. On the tour we travel through some of Iceland´s best hidden treasures. We will see Namaskarð geothermal area and the volcano Krafla and the colorful formations of Gjástykki volcanic region, the Ásbyrgi canyon and the beautiful area of the National Park of Jökulsá where we will hike to the magnificent Hljóðaklettar or Echo Cliffs. On the last day we will explore Lake Mývatn where in addition to geological wonders we will also see the birdlife the area is known for. On this tour you get both best scenery and less used trails so you can enjoy the pure nature while you ride through the wide open spaces. All luggage is transported. Sleeping bag accommodation in farmers cottages and mountain hut.

  • Tour Itinerary

    Day 1: Meeting at Lake Myvatn, Hverir hotsprings, Krafla volcano, Gjastykki lava field, Oxarfjord.
    Group meeting at our partners office at 10 a.m. Bike and helmet fitting. When everyone is set we depart from the driving to the hotsprings of Hverir. After a short break exploring bubbling mudpits and fumaroles we continue along the valley of Hlidardalur to the geothermal powerplant of Krafla, learning about the volcanic activity of the area. We drive then to the crater of Víti, where our cycling starts. For the next hour we have the ascent of the day as well as great view over the lava landscape of Gjastykki. The route then descents to the rough landscape of Gjastykki. After a lunch break we continue on mud packed trails through the rolling hills down to the fjord of Oxarfjord where we find our guesthouse for the next two nights.
    Total distance: 43 km biking – rough trails, mud packet trails, asphalt.

    Day 2: Asbyrgi Canyon, hiking tour through the National Park to the Echo Cliffs, biking through rolling hills to the fissure of continental boundaries.
    After finishing breakfast we cycle along the road to Asbyrgi Canyon for an exploration of this amazing formation. Here we leave the bikes and start our hike through the National Park of Jolulsa to the Echo Cliffs - Hljodaklettar formations. Our assistance vehicle will transport the bikes while we hike, to Vesturdalur where we meet again. After lunch we get back on the bikes for a fun riding down the green hills to the fissure of the continental boundaries. From here we have an easy ride home to the guesthouse. 
    Total distance: 51 km biking - 38 km biking on asphalt and mud packet trails, 13km hiking on trails.

    Day 3: Up up up the hills, lush green vegetation of the Blaskogaheidi, Þeistareykir geothermal area.
    After breakfast we say goodbye to the guesthouse and start the day cycling along the paved road to the west. After few kilometers we leave the road starting our journey up the heath of Blaskogaheidi. The trail goes through bushes and rocks up to the cliff of Beinaklettur, where the mouth of the valley between the mountains opens up for us. The trail along mountain Ketilfjall is a fun riding to the hotspring area of Þeistareykir where we find the primitive mountain hut to sleep in for the night. Tonight we will enjoy a typical mountain feast, far away from civilization.
    Distance: 32 km biking – asphalt, mud packet trails

    Day 4: Mountain pass of Bondholl, the magnificent crater of Litla Viti, fissures and black lava crossing.
    We start the day by hiking up to the pass of Bondholl, from here the trail goes between the mountains to the magnificent crater of Litla Víti, a 75 meter vertical drop into the ground. After a short break we continue to the split boundary of the continental plates. Here we cycle along the rift valley filled with black lava since the eruption in 1984. After lunch break we must cross over the pitch black lava field and here we get a chance to cycle on the amazing lava trail. In the afternoon we get the great view of lake Myvatn as we find our way down through the rolling hills back to civilization where we find our accommodation. Tonight we enjoy a relaxing bath in the Myvatn Naturebath to ease our muscles after great days of cycling – transfer both ways.
    Distance: 43 km biking - mud packet trails, rough trails, up/down hills.
    Accummulated ascent: 626m  Accumulated descent: 616m

    Day 5: Easy cycling around lake Myvatn, discovering pseudocraters, the dark castles, Hofdi peninsula, Hverfjall crater and Myvatn Naturebaths.
    Heading out after breakfast we cycle on the coastline of lake Myvatn to the peninsula of Hofdi, known for birdlife and beautiful formations. From here we go to Dimmuborgir, the “dark castles”, where we take a walk through the lava formations looking for the trolls around. After lunch we cycle on to the well known crater of Hverfjall, climbing to the crater rim for the beautiful view of the entire region of Myvatn. Return to our partners office around 2 p.m.
    Total distance: 35 km biking - 28 km biking on asphalt and gravel, 7km hiking on trails

    Bike Tours 

    - Equipment list for Bike Tours

    For your own wellbeing and safety we strongly suggest following the advice of our equipment list, this includes having good quality rain-gear, tops and bottoms! Also respect that cotton clothing is not appropriate for any strenuous outdoor activity – this includes jeans and t-shirts. Modern outdoor clothing is by far more comfortable and will greatly improve your experience. 

    Bike clothing:

    • Buff or light hat that fits under the helmet. 
    • Wind and waterproof bike jacket – ideally with a hood, e.g. Gore-Tex. 
    • Long and short sleeve layers of wool or synthetics in variable thickness for different weather conditions. 
    • Light puffy jacket or vest for breaks and stops. 
    • Bike pants with a good pad, shorts/bibs/long-pants for variable weather conditions.
    • Wind and waterproof pants cut for cycling. Please note that full raingear is mandatory in Iceland. 
    • Bike shoes / light hiking boots.
    • Socks for riding – few pairs light and heavy.
    • Neoprene over shoes / Gore-Tex bike socks or Seal-Skin socks. 
    • Bike gloves, thin and thick. 
    • Ideally have a change of clothes for variable conditions, thick and thin. 

    Day pack:

    • Back pack for cycling (20L +).
    • Water bottle or camel bag.
    • Sandals or neoprene boots for wading rivers.
    • Sunscreen.
    • Camera with spare batteries.
    • Toilet paper.
    • A small first-aid kit.
    • Energy bars. 
    • Repair tools.
    • Derailleur hanger / drop out – fitting your frame. 
    • Spare tube fitting your wheel size.
    • Tube repair kit. 
    • Quick-link for your chain size.

    Other gear:

    • Bike fitting the tour – can be rented.
    • Biking Helmet. 
    • Sunglasses / protective glasses.
    • A duffel bag for the transport of your overnight gear between huts. Please avoid bringing a suitcase! 
    • Sleeping bag – A basic sleeping bag with no specific temperature rating is sufficient for this tour since all the huts are heated.
    • Casual clothes / change of clothes for wearing in the hut.
    • Spare bike clothing (see above). 
    • Towel – light weight and packable. 
    • Bathing gear (depends on tour). 
    • Sunglasses & sun protection. 
    • Headlamp for reading and getting around the hut. 
    • Casual clothes / change of clothes for wearing in the hut.
    • Personal first aid kit – including blister care. 
    • Prescription medication and other personal health items.
    • Toiletries; Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, earplugs etc.
