Nature, history, whales and northern lights

This is a winter break that shows you a side of Iceland known to only a few! The Snæfellsnes peninsula is our first stop where we visit a shark museum and take a look at the whales of Grundarfjörður. After we head north along the coast and away from the crowds, we find our comfortable country lodge, Vogur, known for its comfort and excellent food from local ingredients. Since we are far away from the nearest light source we will hopefully have a good chance to see some Northern Lights during our stay here. The next day you can choose to go on a tour around the wild region of Fellströnd or stay at the lodge. On the day tour we visit the church at Skarð, visit local farmers and see the local’s handiwork. On the way back to Reykjavík you have the possibility to go on a tour Into the Glacier of Langjökull, or visit some of the pearls of Borgarfjörður like the waterfalls of Hraunfossar, the hot spring of Deildartunga or we might take a look into one of the caves of Hallmundarhraun. The perfect winter getaway to an amazing region.

Included in price: Driver-guide on day 1 and 3 (day 2 is optional) breakfast and dinner for 3 days (from lunch day 1 to lunch day 3), whale watching tour on day 1, visit to shark museum,  transportation, accommodation in a Country Hotel in made up beds (2 nights) and snowshoes when needed.

    Single supplement: 10.000 ISK

Only a few come this way but they are richly rewarded by unique nature and history, where some sites are home of events in the Icelandic sagas. During this day tour will visitthe church at Skarð which has been a church site since the 13th century. The current church was built in the early 20th century and is a typical Icelandic country church. Day 3: Reykjavík – Grundarfjörður – Whale watching - Vogur
You will be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík in the morning between 08:30 and 09:00am by your guide. For the next three days we will be travelling through west Iceland, a region filled with its history and amazing nature. From the city we head north in the direction of Snæfellsnes, a peninsula that stretches out into the sea from the west of Iceland. The peninsula is known for its beaches and it is divided by a mountain ridge that stretches along from east to west. We make our way to north side of Snæfellsnes for a visit at the Shark museum at Bjarnarhöfn, run by the local family that has been fishing and producing shark since the eighteen hundreds. From there we continue over to Grundafjörður, a small town on the northern part of the peninsula, where we go for a 2 hour whale watching tour around the Breiðafjörður bay (not available in October). In winter, herring has been coming into the fjord in winter followed by vast number of Orcas creating the perfect opportunity for a unique whale watching tour. After our adventure at sea we turn back along the north side of the peninsula and head over to the remote region of Fellsströnd where we find the Vogur country lodge where we will spend the next two nights.

In the past, Vogur was a busy farmstead that has been converted to a quality hotel. The location is set away from all civilization and is truly off the beaten track surrounded by untamed nature. Its secluded location makes it the ideal place to see and capture the northern lights.

In the evening we will enjoy the comfort of our country hotel where an excellent 3 course dinner awaits us and we have the opportunity to relax in an open air hot tub under the night sky.  If we are lucky the Northern lights may come out and grace us with a spectacular show.
