Snaefellsjokull is Iceland's smallest glacier. But, don’t be fooled by its size. Though small in stature, it is also one of Iceland's best known. In fact, the whole area of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is incredible - equally deserving, you might say; a rugged yet beautiful arm of the Iceland's west coast that reaches out into the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, on clear and bright days, Snaefellsjokull, which is on the end of the peninsula, can be seen from Reykjavik, even though it is approximately 200 km away.

This glacier is known all over the world thanks to Jules Verne’s A Journey to the Center of the Earth where the characters of the book started their journey into Earth's core. Snaefellsjokull was also featured in the 2008 Hollywood movie, of the same name. Recent notoriety aside, this area of Iceland has long been considered a mystical place, with many folk and fairy tales - and the glacier is the source of this mystical power. In fact, the village of Arnarstapi which is just south of the glacier is said to be the site of a UFO landing!
