Black Sand Beach ATV and Glacier Kayaking South Coast Combo

On this meet-on-location combo tour, you visit two popular South Coast attractions, but in a unique way.

Your first tour is an ATV/Quad-bike ride on the black lava sands of Sólheimasandur. You will meet your guide at the Mýrdalsjökull Base Camp, where you will receive all the necessary gear and get a brief safety lesson before heading out to the black beaches on your quad bikes.

You get to take in some fantastic views of the glaciers and vast beaches of the South Coast before visiting the famous Sólheimasandur DC3 Plane Wreck.

After the ATV tour, you must travel on your own to our Sólheimajökull Base by Sólheimajökull glacier. You will get detailed driving instructions on your voucher if you book the tour. Once there, you will meet your kayaking guide, who equips you with a dry suit and other necessary kayaking gear.

He will also demonstrate the proper kayaking technique for your beginner-friendly sit-on-top kayak. When everyone is ready, you push away from shore and explore the majestic icebergs that have calved off the glacier.

Your guide will lead you around the lagoon to admire the glacier, its icebergs, and the steep cliffs of the surrounding mountains; from a perspective that can only be seen from the lagoon. After approx. + 90 minutes of paddling, you head back to the land.

Please note: All drivers must be 17 years of age or older and have a full, valid driver's license. According to Icelandic law, a learner´s permit, tractor, or motorcycle license is not sufficient. Single riders and groups with odd numbers are required to book a single-ride ATV. This tour is "meet on location" only.

Practical Information

Study this FAQ in details before contacting us with your questions.

Icelandic Mountain Guides have taken out extra fee for single use of kayak. There is a maximum to how many kayaks can be on each tour per guide. The guide will for each tour find out the best solution according to the ability and interest of the group.

We recommend a long sleeve clothing in order to separate your skin from the dry suit. Avoid bulky clothing they might restrain your ability to put on the dry suit. Usually worrying about temperature is unnecessary since this is a summer tour and also guests need to walk to the lagoon and paddle during the tour. Extra socks might come in handy if your feet get wet. Also for more information you can have a look at our equipment list.

We always recommend to book as soon as you are ready especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. It is easy to change or cancel 24 hours before departure by emailing us ([email protected]). Tours can also be purchased the day of as long as there are spaces available.

There are no official addresses on our meeting points but you can see directions and GPS points if you click the map above.

Before we head to the glacier for the tour we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment, crampons and harnesses. The crampons need to be adjusted to each persons shoe size so it is important that people arrive 20 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.

  • Light hiking shoes with a rigid sole work well for short trail walking in Iceland.
  • Other clothing should be picked according to weather that day. We advise dressing in layers.
