Private Silver Circle Tour

Pickup in Reykjavík starts a full day on the Silver Circle — West Iceland's quieter loop of waterfalls, hot springs and saga history. With a private vehicle and your own guide, you set the rhythm of the day.

The route follows Hvalfjörður, the "whale fjord", a deep inlet most visitors skip by driving through the tunnel beneath it. Taking the old fjord road means still water, empty roadsides and uninterrupted mountain views.

At Deildartunguhver you stand beside Europe's highest-flow hot spring, where roughly 180 litres of near-boiling water (97°C) erupt from the ground every second and travel by pipeline to heat towns along the coast.

Next door stands Krauma, a geothermal spa fed entirely by Deildartunguhver's run-off. There's the option to stop and soak in its mineral baths and steam rooms before the tour moves on.

Reykholt follows — the medieval seat of Snorri Sturluson, Iceland's great saga author. It is a quiet but pivotal place in the story of Norse literature.

Hraunfossar is the route's signature sight: a 900-metre-wide spread of clear water trickling straight out of a lava field into the glacial Hvítá river. Neighbouring Barnafoss roars through a tight gorge only a short walk away.

The drive turns for home at Húsafell, a sheltered green pocket at the foot of the highlands and a favourite summer retreat, with meals on offer at Hotel Húsafell or the Húsafell bistro. It's also the traditional starting point for Langjökull glacier trips, and optional extras — snowmobiling, ATV riding, horse riding or a lava-cave visit — can be added on request for an additional fee.
