Snorkeling in Silfra
Come along on a remarkable snorkeling day tour in the crystal clear waters of Silfra fissure in Þingvellir National park, which has been rated a world top 5 diving site. Experience the amazingly clear glacial water with experienced PADI divemasters and instructors.
Silfra is a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in Thingvellir National Park. The rift was formed in 1789 by the earthquakes accompanying the divergent movement of the two tectonic plates. The diving and snorkeling site at Silfra is right where the two continents meet and drift apart about 2 cm per year. Silfra is the only place in the world where you can dive or snorkel directly in a crack between two tectonic plates.
You will meet you at the parking lot of Silfra fissure, where you will be dressed up in a dry suit before entering the Silfra fissure. As the glacial water finally reaches Silfra it creates a very slight and comfortable current and all you need to do is allow yourself to float downstream. Because of the water’s clarity, this floating may feel in fact more like flying. You will spend about 30-40 minutes snorkelling through Silfra. After a short walk back to the parking lot, hot chocolate and cookies will be waiting for you.
Please be sure to bring a pair of long underwear and two pairs of thick wool socks to make sure that you stay comfortably warm in the 2°C water. Your hands and face will come into direct contact with the water, but the rest of you should stay dry. If the weather is less than favourable, no worries, this company has a “changing room” on wheels for you to take shelter in while changing.
This is truly an is an otherworldly experience; the near-freezing water, astonishing colours, and sensations of flying provide a unique environment for liquid meditation that you will never forget.
