The Blue Secret of Sólheimajökull
Come with us on a glacier hike on Sólheimajökull with a visit to a newly found ice cave.
When you arrive at the Icelandic Mountain Guides Base Camp at the edge of the glacier, you will be geared up with the necessary glacier equipment - an ice axe, crampons, harness and a helmet.
When everyone is ready, you start your hike towards the glacier. The glacier hike will take you up close to amazing glacier formations, deep crevasses and high ridges - an otherworldly landscape that is constantly changing and evolving. Your guide will teach you about the features you are witnessing and the geology of the area.
We will then arrive at a new beautiful blue ice cave and, literally, head into the glacier. The cave is naturally formed by the movement of meltwater in the summer, that has left a stunningly crystal blue tunnel behind. You will spend enough time in the cave to fully take in your surroundings, before heading back over the glacier to the Base Camp, where your hike started.

Practical Information
What is the difference between Sólheimajökull and Skaftafell?
Sólheimajökull is in the south and is closer to Reykjavik, Skaftafell is in the south east and much farther away. The tours we offer on both locations are very similar, only operated on different glaciers so you can choose the one that best fits your travel schedule.
Why do I need to arrive 20 minutes before departure time?
Before we head to the glacier for the tour we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment, crampons and harnesses. The crampons need to be adjusted to each persons shoe size so it is important that people arrive 20 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.
How long in advance do I need to book?
We always recommend to book as soon as you are ready especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. It is easy to change or cancel 24 hours before departure by emailing us (info@mountainguides.is). Tours can also be purchased the day of as long as there are spaces available.
What is the address of the meeting place?
Our meeting points do not have official addresses, but you can see directions and GPS points if you click the map above, or find the location on Google Maps here.
Is it possible to join a glacier hike while pregnant?
Your safety is our highest priority. Our guides are highly experienced in leading glacier hikes and will assess conditions on the day of your tour. Because glacier terrain and Icelandic weather can change quickly, participation during pregnancy will be decided by the guide on site, taking real-time conditions into account to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
